The dark remembers.
The book
The dark remembers. Every card is a door.
On the same night, in three corners of the world, three people kill someone they love. In a flooded alley, Riegel watches his brother die on his own knife. On a crumbling southern estate, Anna's blade finds her father's heart. In the western badlands, Creez fires a holy bullet into the demon wearing his little cousin's face.
Each tragedy carried the same mark: a shard of glowing purple glass. The ruling Houses saw nothing. The Cups govern, the Magicians watch from crystal towers, the Swords keep their clans, and all of them looked away.
Netherfiend did not. Deep in its bone halls, the Skull Sovereign Ossiran reads the Major Arcana, the old laws of the world, and the cards are moving exactly as written. That should frighten everyone, because it means someone else read them first.
The world
Four Houses, and the tomb apart from them.
Four Houses under a 300-year Concord: the Senate of Cups, in the canal city of Calice; the Pentacles' Magicians, in the Crystal Spires; the Sword clans; and the Wands of the Ember Marches. The Great Tomb of Netherfiend stands apart. The 22 Major Arcana are literal laws of nature.
Who carries the glass
Riegel. A lower-city swordsman, chained and sent to Calice.
Anna. Fugitive blade-daughter of a southern estate.
Creez. A badlands gunner carrying his father's holy gun.
Who looked away
Speaker Lucan Merrow. Cups.
Archmagister Halvard Coyne. Pentacles.
Imre Vantress. Swords.
Calda Rook. Wands.
The standard
Two figures keep this tomb.
Bearer of the Thirteenth Arcanum
Ossiran
Skull Sovereign of Netherfiend
Eyeless for 311 years. Violet-cored fire in the sockets, a dark iron circlet, bone hands, and an unnerving stillness.
“I am never pleased when the cards do exactly what they promise.”
Keeper of the Bone Deck
Velisande
Witch-Seneschal of Netherfiend
A black and violet dress, silver key-shaped hair pins, and the Bone Deck at her waist. She never raises her voice. The smile is lovely and frightening.

A courtesy
The cards have another hall.
Netherfiend is a tarot-world. Shining Tarot is a separate house for readings, not a chapter of this book. The passage is held here until the house confirms the public address.
